James Tubbs Violin Bow (c.1870)

This silver-mounted violin bow, crafted circa 1870, represents an intriguing chapter in the early work of renowned English bow maker James Tubbs. Notably, the stick bears a “J. Tubbs” stamp boldly placed over an earlier Hill stamp—a reflection of the fractured relationship between Tubbs and the Hill firm. According to historical accounts, when Tubbs encountered one of his own creations branded with the Hill name, he reasserted authorship by stamping his own name directly over it.

The round stick is fashioned from select pernambuco and displays excellent balance and handling. Light wear to the handle attests to its history as a favored tool of a dedicated player. Tonally, it delivers an exceptionally warm and rounded sound—qualities that have made Tubbs’ bows enduringly sought after by discerning musicians.
